Your Destiny is Fiction

So as you may know, recently we've been working on our ficto-planet paintings!  I did sooo many thumbnails until I had something I liked (bottom-right thumbnail was more or less the final one).  Then the magical journey of applying pigments on warpy paper began.

With even more great tips from Tim, I finished this painting late in the morning, because... well, I need to spend a lot of time on my paintings before I'm satisfied with how they look.  Have a look at all the conceptual process, and the painting of course :)
If only I can make the gouache look as vibrant as the digital stuff :|

  4. The digital ones are great! Screw gouache you should just work on developing those instead :D

  5. But... Digital is sooo easy to make pretty! I want to get gouache under control before really moving into the detailed digital world ;)

  6. the key is using the white of the paper for illumination and not the white in the tube. I'm sure youve seen the Blacksad novels, and also check out Sam Bradley at Dreamylabs, hes pretty damn good with it as well.

  7. Awesome, thanks for the tip. How would you do that if you're going for a fully opaque look though?

The art you mentioned is awesome! I love it!

  8. You dont, its the nature of the medium. If it were oil you would glaze over it but with gouache you gotta plan it carefully. You can use light washes over areas that you want to have a specific illuminated color and build it up gradually but you just gotta resist the urge to slap paint down...its a learning process and gouache is tough but dont give up on it, once you understand that your digital works will be that much stronger...plus its nice to be able to hold a physical painting in your hand rather than on screen.

  9. Great! Thanks again! I'll try to build up the glows more gradually.

And I totally agree with holding an actual painting as opposed to a print-out of a digital :)
